How practise I upload or download a GEDCOM file from Ancestry?

When uploading or downloading family trees, Ancestry uses GEDCOM files. GEDCOM stands for Genealogical Data Communications, a universally accepted file format for family unit tree files. This format allows dissimilar family tree software applications to empathise and open the same family tree file, bypassing the differences in coding that would commonly prevent sharing. Genealogists using a Mac tin even share their GEDCOMS with PC users.

Note: GEDCOM files are text-only. Any pictures, charts, books, views, or similar items constitute in the original file volition not be included in the GEDCOM. Vital information, notes, and sources are commonly retained later conversion.

Uploading a GEDCOM file to Ancestry

Note: GEDCOM files uploaded to Ancestry have a maximum file size of 75MB

  1. Click on the Trees tab, located in the master navigation bar at the top of the page and select Create & Manage Copse from the driblet-down list.
  2. Click on the Upload a GEDCOM file link located in the bottom section of the folio.
  3. On the Upload a Family unit Tree page, click the grey Choose File push.
  4. This will open a window from which yous can select the GEDCOM file that you lot would like to upload. Later you locate the file, select it and click the Open button.
  5. Past default, all trees are listed as public trees. This allows all members to see the deceased individuals in your tree, while hiding the full name of living people. If yous would like to privatize your tree, uncheck the Permit others to come across my tree every bit a public member tree box.
  6. If you would like to enter a clarification of your tree, click the Description field and input your information. This is optional, you lot are not required to provide a clarification to complete the upload procedure.

  1. Click the Copse tab, located in the principal navigation bar at the top of the folio and select the tree you lot would like to download from the drop-downwardly carte.
  2. Click the Tree Name drib-down menu and select ViewTree Settings.
  3. On the correct side of the page, within the Manage your tree section, click the EXPORT TREE button.

Troubleshooting Download Issues

If the File Download window does not appear and your computer automatically downloads a text file:

  1. Correct click with your mouse (on a Mac Command+ click simultaneously) on the DOWNLOAD YOUR GEDCOM FILE button and select Save target as... from the drop-down carte.
    Note: If you are using Firefox or Google Chrome, select Save Link as... from the drop-downwards list. If you are using Safari, select Download linked file as.
  2. A Save As window will appear. Select a location for the file that you will exist able to locate later, such as Desktop. So give the file a name, and click Save.
